April 25, 2011

Hola,

The week of Easter, Semana Santa, is quite an event here in Sevilla. That Google search would entertain you for a while. However, it rained nearly all week, so we didn't see a lot of the processions and stuff they normally do.

Over the past few weeks I prayed a lot for comfort and strength to do those things the Lord expects of me. I wanted to know my standing before Him. I wanted to feel His love. I wanted to know if He was pleased with my efforts. With these things, and quite a few other things on my mind, I went to church. During the week I had been pondering quite a bit about the Savior's life and his Atonement, and tried to focus on Him while taking the sacrament and listening to the talks being given. While the Bishop gave his talk, he said something and I felt a warmth spread through my body. It went from the top of my head all the way down to my toes. It was brief, but it was real. I felt it, and I knew that the Lord loves me, He trusts me, and that with His help I can move forward. I felt encircled "in the arms of safety."

Jesus Christ is our Savior and Redeemer. He knows each of us. He extends His hand each day, to lift us, to strengthen us, and to lead us.

Love,
Elder Fagersten

Just sayin'

I am so excited that Ben is in the MTC!!!!! TWO Elder Fagerstens.

April 18, 2011

Hola,

Another great week. Last Tuesday and Wednesday I was in Cordoba! It wasn't Cordoba, Argentina, Dad, but I was pretty excited to go there. Elder Stanley and I went there for exchanges with Elder Stowell and Elder Hales who are serving there. We went and saw "La Mesquita" which is similar to "La Alhambra" in Granada. Both were built during the time when the Moors, the Muslims from North Africa and other parts of the Mediterranean, ruled southern Spain (about 700-1500 A.D.). You can search more information online, probably more accurate too, but it was really cool to see. When the Catholic church came, and the kings of northern Spain came down and conquered it again, they turned La Mesquita into a cathedral of sorts, and they still use it today.

This week was filled with more experiences and opportunities to grow. I have felt the Lord's love and guidance as I try to overcome weaknesses and difficulties through His atonement. The Holy Ghost leads and guides and teaches us to know what and how we can change. He guides us into all truth. He guides us to the source of all truth, that is, God. We learn of Him and begin to have faith in Him, and in his Son, Jesus Christ. This week is a special time, and an especially important time to study, ponder, and meditate on the infinite and eternal atonement of our Lord. The April issue of the Ensign has great talks that will help us do that. I especially recommend "The Purifying Power of Gethsemane" by Bruce R. McConkie. But also, our own personal study of the scriptures will give us opportunities to be taught by the Spirit. It is a beautiful thing to experience.

I know that my Redeemer lives. He is the light and life of the world. His love is infinite. His law is eternal. Through that love, through His atonement, and obedience to His law, the restored gospel, we will find peace and hope in joy in this life, and the life to come.

April 12, 2011

Hola,

Well, yesterday we had Specialized Training instead of our preparation day, so that's why I didn't send an email yesterday. We had a good week. I am now in Sevilla (well, I guess in English it's Seville) with Elder Pallas and Elder Stanley and Elder Phillips. It's a lot of fun with four of us in the apartment. Sevilla is about an hour and 15 minutes away from Huelva, so, I didn't move too far, and I am still in the same Zone. The first week here was challenging, but as always, the challenges are opportunities, and the Lord helped me.

I know He lives. Prayer, study of the scriptures, especially the Book of Mormon, have helped me come to that knowledge. I have never had an experience where I read the Book of Mormon, prayed and asked if it's true, and received, in that moment, a strong, powerful witness from the Holy Ghost that it is. It didn't come to me that way, but it did come. To be honest, I'm not really sure when it did, but it did. I feel it when I bear my testimony, my testimony of the Book of Mormon and of the prophet Joseph Smith, and of the reality of the plan of salvation, the plan of happiness, that our loving Heavenly Father has provided for us.

Each of you are part of that happiness that I feel in my life, and part of my testimony that God loves me. You are a blessing to me.

I love you!

Love,
Elder Fagersten

***A personal note from the author***
Elder Fagersten's letter reminded me of part of a talk we heard this past General Conference from Elder David A. Bednar.

"I invite you to consider two experiences most of us have had with light.

The first experience occurred as we entered a dark room and turned on a light switch. Remember how in an instant a bright flood of illumination filled the room and caused the darkness to disappear. What previously had been unseen and uncertain became clear and recognizable. This experience was characterized by immediate and intense recognition of light.

The second experience took place as we watched night turn into morning. Do you recall the slow and almost imperceptible increase in light on the horizon? In contrast to turning on a light in a dark room, the light from the rising sun did not immediately burst forth. Rather, gradually and steadily the intensity of the light increased, and the darkness of night was replaced by the radiance of morning. Eventually, the sun did dawn over the skyline. But the visual evidence of the sun’s impending arrival was apparent hours before the sun actually appeared over the horizon. This experience was characterized by subtle and gradual discernment of light.

Revelations are conveyed in a variety of ways, including, for example, dreams, visions, conversations with heavenly messengers, and inspiration. Some revelations are received immediately and intensely; some are recognized gradually and subtly. The two experiences with light I described help us to better understand these two basic patterns of revelation.

A light turned on in a dark room is like receiving a message from God quickly, completely, and all at once. Many of us have experienced this pattern of revelation as we have been given answers to sincere prayers or been provided with needed direction or protection, according to God’s will and timing. Descriptions of such immediate and intense manifestations are found in the scriptures, recounted in Church history, and evidenced in our own lives. Indeed, these mighty miracles do occur. However, this pattern of revelation tends to be more rare than common.

The gradual increase of light radiating from the rising sun is like receiving a message from God “line upon line, precept upon precept” (2 Nephi 28:30). Most frequently, revelation comes in small increments over time and is granted according to our desire, worthiness, and preparation. Such communications from Heavenly Father gradually and gently “distil upon [our souls] as the dews from heaven” (D&C 121:45). This pattern of revelation tends to be more common than rare and is evident in the experiences of Nephi as he tried several different approaches before successfully obtaining the plates of brass from Laban (see 1 Nephi 3–4). Ultimately, he was led by the Spirit to Jerusalem, “not knowing beforehand the things which [he] should do” (1 Nephi 4:6). And he did not learn how to build a ship of curious workmanship all at one time; rather, Nephi was shown by the Lord “from time to time after what manner [he] should work the timbers of the ship” (1 Nephi 18:1)."

Hola,

This week is transfers, and I already left! On Saturday morning, President Clegg called and told me that I will now serve in Sevilla. It is only an hour or so from Huelva, and I'm still in the same zone, but I am going to miss the people in Huelva a ton! They are such wonderful people and I am so grateful for the friends I have there. Elder Niebergall is going home, and Elder Shaver's new companion is Elder Becerra, who will come on Wednesday. Right now I'm in Fuengirola for a meeting, and don't have that much time, but I just wanted to let you all know.

General Conference was great! I know that we have a living prophet. Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ live and love us. I know that the true Church of Jesus Christ has been restored to the Lord, along with the fullness of the gospel, and the priesthood authority to perform the ordinances necessary for our salvation and exaltation. The Lord is very aware of each of us and I know He wants the best for us.

I love you all so much!

Funny Story

Just a quick experience I had:

During personal study one morning, Elder Shaver, out of nowhere, looks up at Elder Neibergall and I and says, "Whenever I read Psalms I just want it to rhyme, but it doesn't." He said it so seriously and I just died laughing.

Hola,

This week was absolutely fantastic. On Thursday we had a special Zone Conference in Sevilla with Elder Schutze, an Area Seventy, and his wife, who were here on a mission tour. He is an amazing man and we learned a lot. Elder Schutze grew up in East Germany, which, as we know, was under communist control. He didn't talk about that a lot, but you can imagine how difficult that would have been. Despite all of that, he grew and progressed in the gospel of Jesus Christ. He looked to the Light of the world, when the world around him was dark. He told us, "We didn't have Church manuals or magazines. They couldn't get to us. We had these (pointing to his scriptures). This is what we had." The scriptures were his light and his guide. As he spoke to us, his words were filled with faith and power and testimony. He knows his Savior. I left that conference strenghtened in my testimony that Jesus Christ is our Savior and our Redeemer, the Son of God. I have a greater desire to strengthen my relationship with Him and continue to "learn of [Him], and listen to [His] words; walk in the meekness of [His] Spirit, and...have peace in [Him]" (D&C 19:23).

Another thing that we did that made this a great week was a fireside. Last night we met at the chapel and Elder Shaver, Elder Niebergall and I taught the message of the Restoration of the Gospel of Jesus Christ through music and narration. Elder Shaver played the guitar and sang, Elder Niebergall narrated and sang, and I played the piano and sang. We have been working on it for a few weeks and I know that the Spirit helped us do it. It went really well. The people said they felt the Spirit and felt strengthened by the message. It was a great experience for us. We felt the Lord's hand help us through the program and things went so well. It strengthened my testimony of this message and this work.

I know that my Redeemer lives. He loves us. He wants us to be happy. I invite each of you to seek and strive to know Him. It will help you while preparing for General Conference and in this Easter season.

Thank you so much for everything.

Love,
Elder Fagersten

¡Hola!

I hope everyone is doing well. I was way happy to hear that everything went well for Ben, going to the temple, and taking more steps on the road of growth and progress that is the gospel of Jesus Christ. How exciting!

When I lived at home, I talked to Dad about a lot of stuff. I asked him questions, told him how I was doing, expressed my concerns, shared my goals, my hopes and dreams, and he was always willing to be there and listen. He helped me a lot in my efforts to improve, to learn, and to grow. Well, I don't live at home anymore, and Dad isn't here in Spain with me. The communication is limited to one, very short hour that we have each week to write emails. So, in this time that I have been away, without Dad right there at the house, I have turned more to my Heavenly Father, in prayer, and have asked Him questions, told Him how I am doing, expressed my concerns, shared my goals, my hopes and my dreams, and He has always been there and listened. I know that He loves us and we can find great comfort and strength by communicating with Him, talking with Him, in prayer. His invitation is that we have faith in his Son, Jesus Christ, that we repent, that we honor our covenants, and receive a greater measure of his Spirit. In the Book of Mormon, we read the words of King Benjamin, who invited us to be humble, "calling on the name of the Lord daily, and standing steadfastly in the faith," and promised "that if [we] do this [we] shall always rejoice, and be filled with the love of God, and always retain a remission of [our] sins; and [we] shall grow in the knowledge of the glory of him that created [us], or in the knowledge of that which is just and true" (Mosiah 4:11,12). I know that this promise is true, and that it is fulfilled, as are all the promises of God, through the atonement of Jesus Christ. Our faith in Him, and His atoning sacrifice, will bring to us the highest and greatest blessings of our Father in Heaven.

This week, we had the privelege of helping one of our brothers enter into the "path which leads to eternal life" (2 Nephi 31:18). Benjamín entered in "the gate by which [we] should enter. For the gate by which [we] should enter is repentance and baptism by water; and then cometh a remission of [our] sins by fire and by the Holy Ghost" (2 Nephi 31:17). We had a beautiful baptismal service on Saturday afternoon, and on Sunday morning, he was confirmed a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and received the gift of the Holy Ghost. We have really enjoyed seeing him grow and progress, and we are anxious to continue to help him draw closer to Christ.

I love each of you soooo much! Thank you for everything. Each and every one of you are cherished, beloved children of God. Your happiness is His greatest desire.

Love,
Elder Fagersten

Hola,

It rained quite a bit this past week, but it didn't dampen our spirits. This week we had a little suprise. There are three of us now! Elder Neibergall, who served as the mission secretary the last 8 months, has come here to Huelva to finish his missionary service. He leaves on April 5, but between now and then, we're going to work, work, work. We do our best to stay focused on our purpose and do the Lord's will. Elder Neibergall is from Roosevelt, Utah (only my second companion from Utah, including the MTC) and he's awesome. He works hard and will help us really continue to do all that we can to bring souls unto Christ.

It is amazing how we change by living the gospel of Jesus Christ, and it is a blessing to be able to see other people's lives change through living the gospel of Jesus Christ. It is a gospel of transformation, a gospel of becoming, a gospel of continual growth and progress. These changes come through the atonement of Jesus Christ. We accept and apply His atonement by living the gospel. There are so many blessings that are available to us, and they will be ours when we choose to obey the commandments of the Lord. Our eternal progression depends on how we use the gift of agency, our ability to choose. We are "free to choose liberty and eternal life, through the great Mediator of all men, or to choose captivity and death, according to the captivity and power of the devil" (2 Nephi 2:27). We don't choose the consequences of our actions, and we don't choose how other people act. We can't. We control our thoughts and our actions. I know that by studying the scriptures each day, and praying each day, our thoughts are more often turned toward the Savior and his teachings, thus our thoughts become more like his. As we do this, our actions also become more like his, and we do and become like Him. Let us take the counsel of Lehi, let us "look to the great Mediator, and hearken unto his great commandments; and be faithful unto his words, and choose eternal life, according to the will of his Holy Spirit" (2 Nephi 2:28). It is His will that we are happy. It is His will that we are free. It is His will that we come unto Him, and partake of his goodness, so that we can live forever with our families, and with Him, in a state of never-ending happiness. The choice is ours!

I love you all so much and thank you for your prayers and for your love.

Hola,

I just want you all to know how much I love you. Yesterday, during sacrament meeting, Bishop shared his testimony. He told us about an experience he had. He had finished lunch and had taken a little rest and walked out the door to go back to work. (Here in Spain there is mediodía, from 2 until about 5 p.m., most people go home for lunch and take a rest then go back to work). He walked out the door, his wife was outside, his children in the house doing their homework, and the thought came to him, "What a blessing to have a family." It was a small moment, very short, but it made such an impression on his mind that he continues to think about it. He bore testimony of Jesus Christ, how the gospel blesses our families, and that through the atonement it will be possible to be with our families forever. "We can never learn enough," he said, as he spoke of the Savior. And that is true.

The past few weeks, in my personal study of the Book of Mormon, I have come to know my Savior in a deeper, more personal way. I know that He lives. I encourage each of you to continue to study, to really ponder and meditate, on the message of the Book of Mormon. It is a message of hope, happiness, and healing. It is the message of the gospel of Jesus Christ. It is the invitation to come unto Him. It is the mind and will and voice of the Lord, the power of God unto salvation. By accepting its message, we receive the witness of the Holy Ghost that it is true, and that Joseph Smith was a prophet. He did, in reality, see God, the Father, and the Son, Jesus Christ. He sealed his mission, his works, and his testimony, with his own blood. He talked of Christ, he rejoiced in Christ, he preached of Christ, he prophecied of Christ, and he wrote according to his prophecies so that we may know to what source we may look for a remission of our sins. The Book of Mormon is the word of God, and we will come closer to our Savior, and to our Father, by abiding by the precepts of that book. This knowledge has come to me through the power of the Holy Ghost. My faith in Jesus Christ strengthens, my love for Him grows, and my appreciation for Him deepens each time I read that sacred record. I add my testimony to that of King Benjamin, that there is "no other name given nor any other way nor means whereby salvation can come unto the children of men, only in and through the name of Christ, the Lord Omnipotent" (Mosiah 3:17). We honor our Savior by accepting his atonement, accepting that infinite and eternal gift. As we accept that gift, we accept Christ, and as we accept Christ, we accept the Father, and as we accept the Father, we obtain the promised blessings that he has in store for each and every one of us.

I love you so much.

Love,
Elder Fagersten

Hola,

This one's going to be short today, but we still had a great week.

I know that the Lord lives and it is a privilege to be a missionary, to be part of this work. It is His work. He leads it. He stands at the head of this church. His church. He restored it through the prophet, Joseph Smith, as well as the priesthood authority, and the fulness of the gospel. The Book of Mormon is true. All of the rights, powers, keys and authority to administer the ordinances of life and salvation are upon the earth, and available to all who will have faith, repent, and come unto Him, be baptized, receive the Holy Ghost, and endure to the end of their lives in keeping the commandments of God. Jesus Christ is our Mediator. He is the Lamb of God, "who is mighty to save and cleanse from all unrighteousness" (Alma 7:14).

I encourage all of you to study the scriptures and pray every day. Develop your relationship with the Savior and you will find greater peace and happiness in your life.

Elder Fagersten

Hola,

What an awesome week! You all know, but I just saw that my little brother, Ben, has been called to serve as a missionary of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and assigned to labor in the Arizona Pheonix Mission!!!! I am so excited! I know that he has been called by a prophet of God. We had a good week, but that is definitely the highlight!

Elder Shaver is a stud! He's such a great missionary, he has a positive attitude, and the work ethic to go with it. This week we had Zone Conference and I was able to see my trainer, Elder Adams. He is serving in the San Fernando Zone, near Cadiz (to the south of us). It was great, and we received great instruction as well. The Spirit was there and taught me a lot of things that I can apply in my life to become a more faithful servant of the Lord; to become a consecrated missionary. President Earl and his wife were also there. He is the MTC President in Madrid. It was great to see him as well and talk with him for a little bit. I am so grateful for the wonderful leaders we have here. President and Hermana Clegg continue to love and encourage us and help us enjoy this wonderful experience.

This weekend, we went to Sevilla again for Stake Conference. Elder Teixiera of the Seventy, and Elder Hallstrom, of the Presidency of the Seventy, and their wives, came and spoke. It was a wonderful experience and again I felt the Spirit very powerfully. After the meeting was over I introduced Milagros, the girl that recently joined the church here, to Elder Hallstrom. Afterward she told me, "I don't know why, but when he shook my hand I felt like I was going to cry." She felt the Spirit, and the love that Elder Hallstrom has for the Lord. She is very sensitive to the Spirit and she is a strong and faithful member. The gospel means everything to her.

The 1st Counselor in the Stake Presidency (Dad, he's from Argentina!) gave a wonderful talk and shared a story I wanted to tell you as well. There was a family in our stake, and the husband recently lost his job. They needed to buy a car so that he could find new work and have more options for employment. After many prayers, struggles, and sacrifices on their part and from others, they had enough money to purchase a car for the family. It was a miracle and they were so grateful for that blessing from the Lord. A couple of days later, the husband said to his wife, "I know we have enough money now, but we can't buy the car. There is another family who doesn't have food to eat. We will give them the money so that they can have food on their table." Tears filled my eyes as I heard this story, and I felt such great love and gratitude for these people. They love their Savior. I thought of His sacrifice, and what He gave for me, and for each one of us. I know He lives and loves us. His atonement has the power to heal and change our lives. It is a privilege and honor to share this message of hope and love as one of His servants.

I love each of you and hope you are all doing well. Thank you for everything!

Love,
Elder Fagersten
